Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for NYC in Maiden Address
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Dynamics
The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.
The Basic Challenges of Leadership

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
