People have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official said the morning session ended without significant progress, because of differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the differences between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war administration of the region

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to recover," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist a participant stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the captives to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of the population want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Constantly we check the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated two more dead people had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south region, medical staff stated.
