The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
