The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside his partner, announced how he will personally create this new flavor within an individual series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company
This latest development escalates the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
âI'm accomplishing what they couldn't,â Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. âI'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.â
This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Future Plans
The founder indicated that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
