The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… sort of.

“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
