Our Diamond Family Unofficial Video Game of the Year List for 2025
Alright, how did you experience 2025 in your home? Could it be described as all as good as people post on online? Full of A-grades for the children and elaborate costume birthday parties for the adults? Maybe it felt like a sea of frustration with only sporadic enjoyable flotsam? And was any of it actually real, or have we all become AI-generated AI slop beings with perfect teeth?
I've assembled my thoughts for a chat, ready or not, to discuss the most important thing in twelve months: which video games we enjoyed the most. So here goes:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In real life."
Game Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into acting, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Game the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he objects, I reply that I am doing this to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for mature audiences. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is incredible. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you have a moment of clarity and understand it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just lacked the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a fantastic concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play constantly. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I present that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and they are obviously an astute judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a punishingly tough non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between business deals that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names bellowed from the doorstep at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
