New York's next mayor affirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, did not confirm his residency plans promptly after his electoral win in November.
"The choice came down to the security of my family and the need to directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
