New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations
Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a âdeceptive figure and a liarâ and alleging of having âa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.â However, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now plans to appear with the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.
âIt's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this election is,â Adams stated.
Adams continued, âThey have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and Iâm going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and Iâm going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.â
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has made headlines internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.
In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adamsâs endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for Adamsâs cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, âAndrew and I will appear together later today.â
The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicksâ first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
