Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's postponement. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, meaning extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is expected to be impacted.
• Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Temperatures Set to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Alerts Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely paramount.
