The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence
At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. Finding His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of the player's talent.
