Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
