France will start intercepting small boats in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
