Fast bowler Atkinson Exacerbates England's Injury Worries.

'Serious blow' for England after Atkinson leaves the field due to a hamstring issue.

The pace bowler added to the fitness woes of the England squad when he left the field early on day two of the Boxing Day Test against Australia.

Atkinson felt a problem in his left leg after the final ball in his spell during the morning session.

The England team reported the 27-year-old felt some "soreness" and would spend time away from the action in order to be assessed "in the coming hours".

The final Test in this Ashes battle beginning on 4 January starts on Sunday, 4 January.

The visitors have previously lost strike bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and another paceman to a side strain during this series.

Matthew Fisher was added to the party to provide backup.

The seamer had a tough time early in the series, managing only a handful of scalps.

He was dropped of the third Test, only to be brought back for the Boxing Day match as Archer's replacement.

Surrey's Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, before adding 28 as a batsman being one of only three England players to get into double digits.

Following a brief spell late on the first day, he returned for the second day's play and had nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind.

Yet, towards the conclusion of that over, he bowled a change of pace to the batsman and immediately felt at his leg.

Gus Atkinson returned to the side for the Melbourne match following his omission the previous Test.
