As Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Popular Photo Shows Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard loud noises echoing across the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the path that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He moved towards something that certainly every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of valour in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and medical teams treating dozens of victims.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to emerge from the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the incident transforming into a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance going into the ocean to save people who were struggling.

Following the attack, statements of appreciation flooded in. A social media message shared gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “kindness will always overcome hatred”.

The team of rescuers published a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. We are touched by the compassion for our responders,” the group stated. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting began until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many moving narratives, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” said a mayor.

“These individuals show altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
