Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
